Motorcycle oil

The right oil is even more important for a motorbike than it is for a car. This is because, unlike in a car, the oil in a motorbike isn't just used to lubricate the engine, but also the clutch. This is called a wet clutch. To ensure that the engine parts are properly lubricated and the clutch doesn't slip, it's vital to use oil with the correct viscosity and additives.

Motorcycle oil differs from car oil in several ways. Because it contains different additives, the quality of the oil is not indicated with an ACEA standard like cars, but with API and JASO classifications. API indicates oil for petrol engines with an S and diesel with a C. The letter that follows indicates the quality. Further down the alphabet means better quality, so SG is less good than SL (currently the highest value).

JASO indicates the quality as MA1 or MA2, with MA2 being the higher quality. The type of oil, for example 10W40, indicates how viscous the oil is at low (the number before the W) and high (the number after the W) engine temperatures. If you don't know which oil you need, you can find it in the instruction manual.
